JERSEY has signed a new agreement with the United Nations children’s agency UNICEF to expand opportunities for Islanders working in global humanitarian roles.
A memorandum of understanding between the Government of Jersey and UNICEF will enable Jersey Overseas Aid to fund its first junior professional officer (JPO) placement with the organisation from 2026.
The move marks the next phase of Jersey’s United Nations-backed programme, which was launched in 2021.
The scheme has previously operated through a five-year partnership with the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, and has supported five early-career professionals to work as full UN staff members for two-year placements in some of the world’s most challenging humanitarian emergencies.
Two Islanders are currently serving as JPOs in crisis-affected areas, including Kyiv and Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.
International Development Minister Carolyn Labey said: “The JPO programme provides a fantastic opportunity for Islanders wishing to embark on a career in international development while directly contributing to ongoing emergencies across the globe.
“This is a practical, powerful way for a small jurisdiction to make a meaningful difference.”
Hannan Sulieman, assistant secretary-general and UNICEF deputy executive director, added: “Through the JPO Programme, young professionals gain valuable experience while contributing new ideas and perspectives to UNICEF’s mission.
“We are proud to welcome talented young professionals from Jersey to support our work for every child.”
