I frequently work with the Island’s Deaf Community. Their needs and requirements are often over-looked and I would like to think I am their ‘go-to person’ in the States Assembly who will try to get their needs recognised and considered. They don’t only require a person fully conversant in their sign language to assist their day to day living but the Deaf also need to be considered when public building such as the hospital are being designed. I am glad I got them a forum with the architects of the new building to have provisions made to accommodate them – simple things like a flashing light instead of an alarm bell, email or text instead of a phone call, make a significant difference to their day to day lives.
